Abstract: On January 1, 2009, Slovakia became a member of the European Union, ranking second among the new members. Due to the state leaders’ political desire and in order to realize the Maastricht Convergence Criteria, Slovakia quickly entered the Eurozone with active support from the broad public. But that the Euro was used against an international fi nancial crisis reduced Euros’ positive role in Slovakia’s economy in certain degree while the European debt crisis that spread and upgraded unceasingly will bring about an obviously disadvantageous infl uence upon the economic development of relatively poor Slovakia. At the same time, the crisis relief mechanism in the Eurozone will make an unusual impact on Slovakia’s domestic politics and its international reputation.
