Abstract: Intellectuals are undoubtedly worth respecting. As a new branch of science, the science of intellectuals is even worth our attention and investigation. A Russian writer of literary theory, thinker and sociologist D.S. Likhachyov who was respectfully addressed as the “last intellectual of Russia” wrote many articles to probe into the connotations and traits of the contemporary intellectuals. He believed that intellectuals were the main body of an independent mind and freethinking, conscience was the root of intellectuals, no matter what fi elds and occasions all needed intellectuals, any country or nation would be certain to die out if it disrespected intellectuals, a man should become an intellectual. Likhachyov’s intellectual concept is an important part of his cultural thinking and his standpoint has certain implications for rethinking China’s contemporary education and developing socialist culture
and ethics.
