Abstract: Language is a principal element in cultural soft strength. For twenty years since the Soviet Union collapse, although the relationships between the newly independent states are often tenuous because of all kinds of complicated historical and political resentment, some states have presented various policies to restrict Russian language and tried hard to push ahead with their national languages in the political, economic and social areas at home, but Russian has always given play to an irreplaceable role in the offi cial and people-to-people exchange in the post-Soviet space and produced a far-reaching infl uence in the course of the regional integration. Russian has also become a key weapon of Russia in increasing soft strength in the post-Soviet space.
