Abstract: Chekhov was one of the greatest playwrights in Russian history. His innovations in traditional dramas were refl ected in many respects. One of his innovations was using subtexts, including pronunciation, intonation, implication, metaphor, ellipsis and pause, etc. The language of the figures in his dramas was given a plentiful meanings and feelings, enhancing the power of his dramas’ expressions. Through decoding the subtexts, readers or audience could better understand the drama fi gures’ image, disposition and features, savor the implications that the writer could not put to words and had a good grasp of the theme of his dramas.
